Time for reflection: 5 questions to ask yourself to determine if you had a winning season

Not sure about your neck of the woods, but where I live, football season is coming to a close.

As we finish off our bowl games and get ready to head into another sport for the winter, it’s time to reflect on the good and not-so-good parts of the season.

Here are five questions to ask yourself to determine if football was a win in your house.

Is my kid happy? As in sad the season is over and can’t wait to come back happy next year. If the season isn’t even over yet and he’s already talking about how he plans to play fall baseball next year, he probably didn’t have an awesome experience.

Did you see individual player development? Maybe your team went 0-9 for the season. Maybe it went undefeated. The win-loss record is way less important than whether or not your child developed in some way. Even if all he gained was a less awkward first impression, some development should be made, or the time investment may be better served in another activity.

Can you name any of the parents, kids or coaches on the team? Personally, we play team sports for the whole team element. Sadly we have been on teams where I couldn’t pick the other kids out of a lineup and the coach’s name may as well have actually been “Coach.” If you and your kid felt like outsiders all season, you may want to look into finding another football home next year.

What was your on field-injury ratio? Teams that play safe get hurt less, that’s just a fact.

Does your coach plan to come back? Workplaces with high employee turnover aren’t necessarily places you may be rushing out to get a job at. Similarly, if your coaches don’t like to stick around, it often says something about the league. Find out what that is before you sign up for a repeat season yourself.
