Sudden cardiac arrest is the No. 1 cause of death for youth and teenage athletes during activity. Having an automated external defibrillator (AED) available and nearby can help prevent a tragedy.
All 50 states and Washington, D.C., have passed laws determining availability, training and usage of AEDs.
USA Football supports these laws for the benefit of young athletes. Through education and proper training, the goal is for coaches, athletic trainers and parents to be better prepared to react to emergencies involving sudden cardiac arrest.
Are you aware of the AED laws in your state?
USA Football’s Heads Up Football program, employed by youth football coaches in all 50 states, includes chapters on sudden cardiac arrest, concussion recognition and response, heat preparedness and hydration and equipment fitting. Health and safety videos also are available at USA Football's Health and Safety page.
