It was a banner year for USA Football Master Trainers in the high school ranks.
Five Master Trainers, who are tasked with leading USA Football Player Safety Coach clinics around the country, captured state titles with their high school football teams.
Here's a breakdown of USA Football Master Trainers who led their teams to championships this fall:
- Steve Specht. The head coach of St. Xavier (Cincinnati), Specht edged another USA Football Master Trainer, Chuck Kyle, in a double-overtime instant classic to capture Ohio's Division 1 state title over St. Ignatius. It was Specht’s third state title and his first since 2007.
- Gabe Infante. Infante guided St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia) to its third state title in four seasons with a decisive 42-7 win over Central Catholic (Pittsburgh). St. Joseph’s Prep finished a perfect 14-0 and is ranked in most national polls.
- Jason Mohns. Mohns led Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to its fourth consecutive state title in a 42-14 victory against Catalina Foothills. Saguaro was 14-0 and outscored opponents 644-139 on the season. It notched wins over the likes of Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Serra (Gardena, Calif.).
- Jake Gilbert. With a 16-13 win over Columbus East, Gilbert and Westfield (Ind.) captured the Indiana Class 5A state title. Westfield lost only twice across the whole season; each loss was by just one point. Westfield improved dramatically from a 7-5 season in 2015.
- Tod Creneti. Creneti steered St. Stephen’s Episcopal (Bradenton, Fla.) to its first title, as it defeated St. Edward 14-12. The win earned St. Stephen’s a Sunshine State Athletic Conference title. The season was highlighted by the return of senior Michael Burch, who was previously told he would never play football again due to a heart condition.
The success that these Master Trainers enjoyed this fall serves as a reminder that proper technique can foster better on-field performance.
