USA Football, during its 2017 Regional Development Camp schedule, will highlight groups of both middle school and high school student-athletes from each location a camp occurs. This is meant to provide an inside look at the types of players and people learning, competing and getting better across the country.
The opening weekend took place in one location: Orlando, Fla.
Gold Ball Winner (High School)
Dennis Shorter, Mainland High School (Daytona Beach, FL.)
Defensive Back, Class of 2019
Shorter made history this past weekend, becoming first-ever USA Football Golden Ball recipient on the high school level. The 5-foot-9, 151-pound defensive back left his mark on the Regional Development Camp in Orlando. He displayed the combination of speed and quickness necessary to be an impact player—personified by his 4.63 in the forty-yard dash. In addition to his ability to fly around the field, Shorter’s hands and ball skill were also excellent.
Gold Ball Winner (Middle School)
Chad Mascoe, Macintyre Park Middle School (Thomasville, GA.)
Quarterback, Class of 2022
At the conclusion of this past weekend, Mascoe was named the first-ever middle school winner of the USA Football Regional Development Camp Golden Ball. The 6-foot, 170-pound quarterback showed ability way beyond his class of 2022 standing. On top of being timed at a 4.9 in the forty-yard dash, Mascoe’s most impressive trait was his ability to throw the deep ball with elite accuracy. Combining his physical traits, positive attitude and competitive nature, he’s the type of signal caller teams can build around.
