High school football player dreams of NFL career--as a general manager

Elijah Hardee has his eyes on the National Football League, but not in the traditional sense.

The senior defensive end at St. Joseph High School in Hammonton, N.J. sees his professional career occurring in an NFL front office, not suited up on the playing field.

Hardee spoke with Philly.com recently and said as early as 10-years old he was dreaming of becoming an NFL general manager.

This is not just a pipe dream either for the high schooler, he recently self-published a book that featured all of his thoughts on what goes into building a successful franchise.

“It all starts in the trenches,” said Hardee. “You have to win up front.”

Hardee also believes a team needs not only a smart quarterback that does not turn the ball over, but a smart defense that can adjust on the fly. His ideal franchise also needs quick skill players that can stretch the field.

“Speed kills,” said Hardee.

The savviness of Hardee’s football mind does not surprise those who know him best.

St. Joseph coach Paul Sacco said that Hardee is an intelligent player that is never opposed to talking football.

Hardee, who admires the front offices of the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks has not closed the door on his playing career just yet.

Following two state championships in three years at St. Joseph, Hardee plans to walk on at either Indiana University at Pennsylvania or Central Michigan.

While he continues to pursue his dreams, Hardee looks back on an impactful quote told to him by his father.

“You’re better off being the person signing the paychecks than the one cashing them,” said Mr. Hardee.
