There always comes a time to step away from the game of football, and for Corky Rogers that time is now.

Rogers, the winningest coach in Florida high school football history, announced that he will be retiring immediately due to health concerns.

The longtime coach, who most recently led The Bolles School (Jacksonville, Fla.), told Jacksonville.com that he no longer had the energy to continue in his role as a head coach.

“I just can’t do it,” said Rogers. “I still have the desire to coach, but it’s not fair to the players because the energy isn’t there for me to do it the way it needs to be done.”

These most recent health concerns are not the first of Rogers’ career. The 73-year-old had heart bypass surgery in 2013 and fell ill just last summer during his vacation in North Carolina.

Rogers will end his career with a record of 465-84-1 over a 45-year span. He also amassed 10 state titles for Bolles during 28 seasons as the head coach. Assistant coach Wayne Belger is expected to succeed him according to Jacksonville.com.

Rogers has left a lasting impact not only on the game of football, but also his players. Mac Jones, who was a quarterback on the U.S. Under-19 National Team in the North American Championship this year, will remember his coach as one who made him an all-around better person:
