Respect—and having fun—are important parts of football for Values Captain Bryson Lucero

Bryson Lucero knows that the sport of football is not for everyone, but to him that only makes it better.

To him, being able to play football is both an incredible blessing and worthwhile tool.

The 6-foot-2, dual-threat quarterback uses the game to not only become better on the field, but to benefit off of it as well.

“Football is the greatest sport because it teaches many lessons that can be applied to life outside of the sport,” he said.

Learning these lessons helped Lucero earn the title of Values Captain at the National Development Games this summer.

The USA Football Values Captains program highlights players who exemplify the positive qualities that football teaches and fosters.

“It means a lot to be designated as the Values Captain because I believe that it is important to maintain good values throughout one’s lifetime,” said Lucero. “I do my best to display good core values in order to make a good impression on others.”

One of the main values that football has taught the IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) prospect is respect. Lucero believes respect is something that can set players apart from their competition, but can only be earned by giving it to family, coaches, teammates and teachers first.

He also gives the upmost respect to football and encourages young players to remember that one of the most important aspects of the game is to have fun.

“I would say that if a young athlete was thinking about playing football, he should have fun with it. After all the sport of football is meant to be fun and entertaining,” said Lucero. “If a player is not having fun, it may ruin the sport for them all together.
