How Kyle Trask went from second-string high school QB to battling for the starting job at Florida

Trust the process.

That is what Florida quarterback Kyle Trask has done since his days at Manvel High School (Texas).

The former two-star recruit is now in contention for the starting job at Florida—but it didn’t come easily.

Trask played backup to quarterback D’Eriq King, now a wide receiver at Houston, during his time at Manvel. He decided not to transfer because in addition to having to sit out one year, his mother would not have supported a transfer for athletic reasons.

Prior to catching the eye of newly hired Florida head coach Jim McElwain, Trask’s only offers came from FCS schools. When Trask eventually signed with Florida, he did so in the shadows of Feleipe Franks, a highly touted quarterback who was also a part of Florida’s 2016 recruiting class.

Trask started working from the moment he stepped foot on campus, knowing he was going to have to compete against his own teammates.

“Once I got here, I was just working my tail off,” said Trask to SEC Country. “With more and more reps, I feel more confident.”

Despite his growth since enrolling early, Trask redshirted the 2016 season to further develop. He took advantage of the opportunity to learn from veteran quarterbacks Luke Del Rio and Austin Appleby and to continue to build his confidence.

“After one year, coming in as an early enrollee to now, I feel 100 percent more confident at the line of scrimmage. I feel like that’s really important because the whole offense looks to you. You gotta be confident. Your energy reflects on everybody,” he said.

Trask’s unusual career path demonstrates that taking the time to focus on development and preparation can pay huge dividends.
