When you ask Makai Bleu Coleman what the game of football means to him, the answer is pretty simple: everything.

For the Values Captain, football is the growth he sees in himself, the relationships he has formed and the challenges he has overcome.

The class of 2021 tailback was thrilled to be selected by his coaches and teammates as a Values Captain at USA Football’s National Development Games, but it was an accolade that came with an added weight.

“It shows that I am doing the right thing and people notice. It also gives me the responsibility of teaching others to stay on point,” Coleman said.

His ability to hold not only himself accountable but also his teammates is one of the main reasons he was selected as a Values Captain.

The USA Football Values Captains program celebrates athletes who exhibit the positive attributes that football teaches.

Coleman also places great worth in the teamwork and comradery created on the football field. He loves pushing his teammates, and recognizes that in order for them to get better they have to be continuously competing.

For those aspiring to play the sport of football, he gives advice on what will make the effort worth the trouble.

“Play for yourself, because you live it, and you'll enjoy working hard at it and getting better,” Coleman said.
