RDC Recap: Miami, Bay Area and Atlanta

By Stephen Spiewak | Posted 3/31/2017

The USA Football Regional Development Camps continued last weekend, visiting some of the top football hotbeds in the country: Miami, the Bay Area and Atlanta.

All three stops lived up to the hype, as the camps featured some of the most talented athletes seen to date in this RDC season. In total, six Gold Balls were awarded – three each at the high school and middle school levels – giving recipients automatic acceptance to the National Development Games, the next stop in their journey to earn a U.S. National Team roster spot.

Here's a breakdown of the top performers from each RDC:

Middle school Gold Ball winner:

Laurence Seymour

Laurence Seymore, DL, 2021, Miami, Fla.

Affectionately nicknamed "Big Baby", Seymore was nothing short of dominant from the word “Go” this past weekend. At 6-foot-2 and 268 pounds and only an eighth-grader, Seymore looked, moved and performed more like a high school upperclassman. Coaches and scouts marveled at how physical his style of play was and his advanced understanding of the nuances of the game. The scariest thing about Seymore is that although he came to the camp as a defensive lineman, he's an even better offensive lineman. Expect to hear big things about Seymore over the next four years.

Middle school top performers:

Elijah Vaughn

Elijah Vaughn, DB, 2021, Miami, Fla.

Frederick Cage

Fredrick Cage, WR, 2021, Lake Park, Fla.

Dylan Himber

Dylan Himber, WR, 2021, West Palm Beach, Fla.

High school Gold Ball winner:

Kaden Frost

Kaden Frost, QB, 2018, Gulf Coast High School (Naples, Fla.)

Frost can really spin it. The 6-foot-3 pro-style quarterback earned top billing at the Regional Development Camp as he enters his fourth season as the starting quarterback on Gulf Coast's varsity squad. Thus far, Frost has thrown for 4,521 career yards. According to 247Sports, Frost, who also plays basketball, has already received an offer from Southern Miss. As the Gold Ball winner, he earns an instant invitation to continue his National Team journey at this summer's Development Games.

Middle school Gold Ball winner:

Tyler Randall

Tyler Randall, DL, 2021, Union City, Calif.

Randall was like a bull in a china shop all weekend long and earned the Gold Ball for his performance. Randall, a 5-foot-7, 220-pound interior defensive lineman, used a combination of speed and power to be a consistently disruptive force. Coaches and evaluators likened his ability to that of an 11th grader and particularly liked the way he used his hands to establish control during 1-on-1s.

Middle school top performers

Aidan Fortenberry

Aidan Fortenberry, LB, 2023, Clovis, Calif.

William Paden

William Paden, LB, 2020, Las Vegas, Nev.

High school Gold Ball winner:

Reuben Lee

Reuben Lee, WR, 2018, Brookside Christian High School (Stockton, Calif.)

Lee does it all for Brookside Christian, contributing as a defensive back, punt returner, kick returner and running back. However, at the Bay Area Regional Development Camp, it was Lee's work at wide receiver that helped him earn the Gold Ball. The 5-foot-9 dynamo helped lead Brookside Christian to a 9-5 record a year ago.

Middle school Gold Ball winner:

Andre Craig

Andre Craig, RB, 2023, Locust Grove, Ga

Only a sixth-grader, Craig took the Atlanta camp by storm, earning the Gold Ball and an automatic invite to the National Development Games this summer. A 5-foot-7, 140-pound running back, Craig was the perfect combination of speed and power and showed that he has a ton of potential. He was clocked at a 4.92 in the 40-yard dash and coaches loved his positive attitude throughout the weekend.

Middle school top performers

Clint Gilbert

Clint Gilbert, WR, 2021, Lawrenceville, Ga.

Byron Green

Byron Green, DL, 2021, Atlanta, Ga.

Phil Mafah

Phil Mafah, RB, 2021, Loganville, Ga.

Michael McGinnis

Michael Maginnis III, QB, 2021, Newnan, Ga.

Njika Fabian Jr, LB, 2021, Powder Springs, Ga.

High school Gold Ball winner:

Rodney Howell, DB, 2018, Peach County High School (Fort Valley, Ga.)

Howell has been a difference-maker at Peach County High School since his sophomore season. In the past two years, he's notched three interceptions and chalked-up 10 pass break ups to go along with 94 total tackles. At 5-foot-10, he's got enough size to disrupt tall receivers. Howell has played basketball in the offseason for Peach County's hoops team, so it's clear that the rising senior savors competition, no matter the platform.
