Working toward the evolution of a better, safer game is something toward which everyone involved in football can contribute.
For Muskegon Catholic Central (Muskegon, Mich.) head coach Steve Czerwon, this pursuit led him to invest in the latest helmet technology.
Czerwon purchased 12 Riddell helmets featuring the company’s “InSite Impact Response System”, allowing trainers to monitor the impact of hits on players wearing the helmets.
When a particularly hard hit occurs, the trainer receives a notification on the sideline.
“It doesn’t mean that a concussion has happened, but it means that a hit hard enough to possibly give someone a concussion has happened,” Czerwon said.
After one season using InSite, the coach has been impressed.
“It’s a neat thing that we’ve weaved into the program,” said Czerwon, who led Muskegon Central Catholic to a 14-0 record and Division 8 state title in 2016.
Perhaps the biggest impact that the new helmet technology has made for the Muskegon Central Catholic football program has occurred with the parents.
Czerwon believes that employing Riddell’s InSite technology demonstrates to parents that he and his staff are doing everything they can to benefit the student-athletes on the field.
“I think it’s been a little bit of a peace of mind for the parents out there,” Czerwon said. “It’s been another tool that we’ve had, to look for and help monitor for a concussion.”
