Georgia tops all states with 29 draft picks in 2017 NFL Draft

For years, Texas, Florida and California have earned the reputation as “The Big 3” when it comes to the states with the deepest football traditions and most talented players.

If the 2017 NFL Draft is any indication, it’s time for that trio to make room for the Peach State.

High schools from the state of Georgia produced 29 draft picks—more than any other state—including three first-round selections: DeShaun Watson (No. 12; Texans), Jarrad Davis (No. 21; Lions) and Evan Engram (No. 23; Giants).

Florida (27), California (26) and Texas (24) were all well-represented. Texas, and specifically, the Dallas-Fort Worth area, is home to three of the Top 6 picks, including No. 1 overall selection Myles Garrett, a former three-sport star at Arlington High School (Martin).

Louisiana and Ohio tied for fifth most with 16 draft picks produced by each. Pennsylvania (11) and Illinois (10) were the two other states to claim double-digit selections.

In a testament to the continued presence of football in all pockets of the country, 38 states were represented among the draftees, including Montana, South Dakota, Delaware and West Virginia. Canada and American Samoa also produced one draft pick apiece.

When it comes to individual high schools, a whopping 12 schools produced a pair of draft picks:

  • Ensworth (Nashville, Tenn.): Corn Elder and Conor McDermott
  • Cass Tech (Detroit): Jourdan Lewis and Delano Hill
  • West Monroe (La.): Cam Robinson and Xavier Woods
  • Dacula (Lawrenceville, Ga.): Alex Armah and Corey Lewis
  • John Curtis (River Ridge, La.): Duke Riley and Malachi Dupre
  • St. Rita (Chicago): Kenny Golladay and Pat O'Connor
  • Gainesville (Ga.): DeShaun Watson and Jeremiah Ledbetter
  • Cypress Bay (Weston, Fla.): Danny Isidora and Matt Dayes
  • Poly (Long Beach, Calif.): Jayon Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster
  • Pickerington North (Pickerington, Ohio): Pat Elflein and Jake Butt
  • Lakewood (St. Petersburg, Fla.): Shaquill Griffin and Rodney Adams
  • Hebron (Texas): Jamal Adams and Dietrich Riley

In addition to Elflein and Butt, who played at Pickerington North, Taco Charlton, the No. 28 overall draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys, played across town at Pickerington Central, giving the central Ohio city of 18,000 people three draft picks.
