Packaged Play: Aaron Judge, baseball’s hottest hitter, was a high school football star

The New York Yankees are the hottest team in baseball; Aaron Judge, the sport's hottest player.

The 6-foot-7, power-hitting outfielder is off to a torrid start this season, compiling a .317 average with 13 homers heading into Thursday night’s game against the Houston Astros.

Impressive statistics aside, Judge stands out on the baseball diamond. He has the height of a basketball player and the physique of a football player.

It’s quite fitting, since Judge thrived in both sports in high school.

During his time at Linden High School (Calif.), Judge was a three-sport star. While he favored baseball and ultimately chose that career path, he was a scholarship-caliber football player at the small Northern California high school located just east of Stockton, Calif.

On the hardwood, Judge was a presence in the post. As a senior, he averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per game, helping Linden to a 19-8 record.

On the gridiron, however, he was unstoppable. In 10 games, he caught 54 passes for 969 yards and 17 touchdowns, numbers that were impressive enough to help him earn local all-area recognition.

After posting a .589 on-base percentage and a .891 slugging average, Judge was selected in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. He opted to attend college and transitioned to Cal State Fresno. The Yankees selected him in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He hit 60 home runs during three seasons in the minor leagues.

With Judge’s physical talents—which he refined during this time as a multi-sport athlete—in full bloom, he appears have solidified his role in the team’s starting lineup.
