Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) could be the No. 1-ranked high school football team in the country when preseason polls come out later this summer.

For now, the legendary Southern California program will simply look to improve this weekend at a USA Football 7on7 regional event.

This weekend kicks off the 2017 USA Football 7on7 season, with events in Los Angeles—in conjunction with the Rams—and in Northern California, in partnership with the San Francisco 49ers.

Mater Dei—which features top quarterback J.T. Daniels and star receiver Amon St. Ra—is one several top programs competing this weekend. Crenshaw, Oaks Christian, Serra and Narbonne are other highly regarded teams who will be honing their skills this weekend.

Daniels is perhaps the best quarterback in the country regardless of class. He’s thrown for 7,891 yards and 100 touchdowns in just two seasons. He’ll be entering his junior season this fall.

The USA Football 7on7 program is built by high school coaches and designed for high school teams. It gives coaches and players an opportunity to compete at a high level—with the same team that will suit up together in the fall.

Fourteen regional 7on7 events will take place throughout June, and top-performing teams have an opportunity to qualify for the 7on7 National Championship Series. The National Championship Series will take place across four different locations:

  • The Star (Frisco, Texas)
  • Pro Football Hall of Fame facility (Canton, Ohio)
  • Hoover, Ala.
  • Santa Ana, Calif.
