The football and basketball programs at Stone Bridge High School (Ashburn, Va.) celebrated in April, when Alabama defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, a dual football-basketball star at the Washington-area school, heard his name called in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Allen will begin his career close to home after the Redskins selected him with the No. 17 overall pick.

Producing a draft pick in any professional sport is an achievement that a high school would take pride in. But what Stone Bridge accomplished in 2017 is truly extraordinary.

Less than two months after Allen heard his name called, Stone Bridge was able to claim yet another first-round draft pick: J.B. Bukauskas, selected No. 15 overall by the Houston Astros in the 2017 MLB Draft.

Bukauskas, currently pitching at North Carolina, is a 6-foot righthander who earned all-area honors as just a sophomore at Stone Bridge.

Two first round picks. Two different sports. The same calendar year. What a six-month stretch for the Stone Bridge athletic department:

Stone Bridge High School has had a heck of a year. #Redskins take Jonathan Allen 17th, #Astros take JB Bukauskas at 15 in #MLBDraft.

While Allen and Bukauskas will begin their professional careers this year, the high school still has one alum poised to be an impact player in the collegiate ranks: Stanford fifth-year senior Ryan Burns, who will compete for the Cardinal’s starting quarterback job.
