Oliver Luck knows what kids need from their coaches.

The former NFL quarterback, current NCAA Executive Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and father of NFL star Andrew Luck emphasizes the importance of coaches finding playing time for athletes and giving as many of them as possible the chance to feel like the focus of certain plays and strategies.

Making kids feel like they matter, like many coaching challenges and opportunities, all starts with quality communication.

Coaches who have their fingers on the pulse of every player have a feel for who is happy – and who is not – with their playing time, position and overall role on the team. The best way to achieve that is through continuous, consistent communication with players.

That is just one of the topics that Luck and other members of Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Advisory Board address in their video appearances in Positive Coaching: Communication, the new online course co-developed by USA Football and Positive Coaching Alliance.

Luck and some of the other top football figures featured in the course – Pat Fitzgerald, Tom Herman, Steve Mariucci and Mark Murphy – provide many tips and tools that help coaches improve their communications with their fellow coaches, officials, players and their parents.

As communication from coaches improves, players will perform better – on the field and off – and the greater our game will grow.
