USA Football certification is not just striving to make football safer, it’s inspiring schools to enhance their approach to safety across sports.

One school district is taking a fundamental concept of USA Football certification—the Player Safety Coach—and introducing it to a variety of sports.

According to the Daily News Journal, the Rockford County School District (Tenn.) has created five new positions dedicated to player safety coaches.

The move was inspired in part by USA Football’s Player Safety Coach, which is a critical component to USA Football certification. The Player Safety Coach is responsible helping to teach, implement and maintain the guidelines shared through Heads Up Football.

"We thought, 'Why don't we expand this to all sports,'" Tackett said.

In addition to making sure athletes’ medical information is properly handled and stored, player safety coaches in Rockford County will deal with issues involving field conditions, equipment, heat and hydration.

Some of the sports that the player safety coaches will be responsible for include swimming, track, volleyball and softball.

The best interests of the players is at the heart motivation for the decision to expand the player safety coach role.

"Our goal is to make high school sports as safe as possible," said Tim Tackkett, Rutherford County athletic director. "I applaud the (school) board for being proactive. It's a new concept and we want to get it right."
