In a pigskin mecca steeped with football tradition, DePaul Catholic (Wayne, N.J.) carved out its own tiny bit of history.
The New Jersey program outlasted some of the country’s top teams to capture victory in the USA Football National Championship Series at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Head coach John McKenna’s squad followed up an impressive 6-1 performance in pool play by rattling off five straight victories in the tournament to capture victory.
DePaul downed McKinley (Ohio) 29-22 in the title game to win the first ever USA Football 7on7 event to take place at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Coincidentally, McKinley advanced to the title game by downing Bergen Catholic (N.J.), one of DePaul’s league rivals.
DePaul assistant coach Nike Campanile, brother of Bergen Catholic head coach Nunzio Campaile, was clearly satisfied with his team’s performance:

The event not only featured top programs—such as Male (Ky.), Maine South (Ill.) and Gateway (Pa.)—but also one of the top plays of the summer, courtesy of Bergen Catholic receiver Dylan Cassi:

With the victory on Saturday, DePaul became the third program to win a USA Football 7on7 National Championship Series event, joining Boiling Springs (S.C.) and Poteet (Texas), which were victorious in Hoover, Ala. and Frisco, Texas, respectively.
