Why Bill Lund is taking a break from coaching

Recently on USA Football’s Coach and Coordinator podcast, Bill Lund opened up about his decision to step down as the linebackers and special teams coach at Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) University.

Lund recently discovered his father-in-law’s prostate cancer had moved into his lungs. In addition to cancer, he was also going through kidney failure. After hearing the prognosis and knowing his wife and father-in-law were in Chicago and he was five hours away, he needed to make a decision.

“Being a football coach is not a nine-to-five job,” Lund said. “Granted, I love what I do and it never felt like work. I just knew I couldn’t be a part-time husband and full-time coach at the same time.”

Lund decided to put his family first and resign from his position.

“The actual decision when it came down to it was easy. It was the reality of the situation…Swallowing the fact that I’m leaving a place I love, leaving a group of kids I think is outstanding and the best groups I’ve been around from a position standpoint,” Lund said in the podcast.

Football Scoop has recently published Lund’s emotional open letter titled “Why I Love Football.”

In the letter, he expresses how grateful he has been to be a football coach.

“Great teams all face adversity and the outpouring and selflessness of so many reaffirms that this is truly the greatest profession,” he wrote.
