Analytics: changing the game?

Coaches spend countless hours coming up with plays and getting players to study the playbook to make sure they have the best odds to win.

However, some coaches have found a way to increase the odds of success even more. They are turning to the use of data-based analytics.

The use of analytics has allowed coaches and their staff to increase their odds for a successful play during those tough fourth-down decisions. The use of analytics even helps coaches manage the clock and timeouts.

Like the playbook, the analytics for each game change depending on the opponent. The percentage of a play's success will change depending on how the other team's tempo and average scoring record.

Championship Analytics is one company that’s gaining momentum among teams. Each week, they provide their clients with three-ring binders full of charts, breakdowns, and strengths and weaknesses of each team.

This newly found concept in football and other sports can be difficult for some coaches to adapt, however, just like a coach calling a play based on a "gut feeling,” the use of analytics can help solidify that decision.
