Guam postpones high school football openers – but not because of nuclear threat

Times are tense in Guam at the moment. While high school football pales in comparison to the uncertainty the U.S. island territory currently faces, high school teams there are facing another set of issues

According to Pacific Daily News, The Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam High School Football, (IIAAG) the season has been postponed one week.

This decision came after IIAAG ruled two fields unsafe. With two field ruled as unplayable the IIAAG needed more time to work with referees to re work and finalize a schedule.

Football commissioner of Marianas Sports Officials Association (MSOA) John Benavente said George Washington High School's field, which is the home field for two teams, and John F. Kennedy's field are unsafe due to lights that fell and are a danger to athletes and spectators.

A team of 15 referees will handle the scheduling changes. With the two fields classified as unsafe, the University of Guam will host games played during the day and evening games may be held at (Hal's) Angels Field, Okkodo High School or Guam High.

The most challenging task for MSOA has been figuring out scheduling between high school football and youth football.

Benavente said (hyperlink), "The biggest obstacle is we have to juggle and accommodate the new high school football schedule that will have two night games Friday and two day games on Saturday. It overlaps with Saturday youth football games and that overlap will stretch our responsibilities, but we will have enough for three crews on Saturdays with two crews handling the youth games and one crew doing two high schools."

The new official kickoff for Guam's High School football season will be Aug. 25.
