High school football season began in earnest Friday, with 12 states kicking off their seasons (joining Alaska and Hawaii, which began earlier). Check out these highlights from the opening week:

  • Kimberly (Wis.) extended the nation’s longest active high school football winning streak to 57 games Friday, winning a dramatic 35-28 decision over Fond du Lac. D.J. Stewart’s 2-yard touchdown run with 48 seconds remaining gave Kimberly the lead for good. Kimberly quarterback Alex Rosner finished with 286 yards passing (11 of 16). Kimberly scored 21 fourth-quarter points to earn the come-from-behind win.
  • University of Georgia recruit Zamir White ran for over 1,600 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior last season. He picked up where he left off Friday, rushing for 305 yards and three long touchdowns for Scotland (N.C.) in a 28-21 loss to Charlotte Mallard Creek. See the touchdown runs here
  • Glendale (Mo.) quarterback Alex Huston, who set state records with 6,131 yards and 76 touchdowns last season, opened the 2017 campaign Friday by throwing for 587 more yards and eight touchdowns in a 54-25 win over Joplin.
  • In a battle of defending 6A state champions from last season, host Louisville (Ky.) Trinity defeated Carmel (Ind.) 31-3, which returned just one offensive starter from last season’s squad. Jacob Dingle and David Florence returned interceptions for touchdowns for Trinity, and the Shamrocks’ defense allowed 78 yards and seven first downs.
  • Corner Canyon (Utah) defeated Pleasant Grove, a top-five team in Class 6A, 31-10 in season opener for both teams. Boise State recruit at QB Zach Wilson ran for three touchdowns and threw for 271 yards. The Chargers’ defense limited Pleasant Grove to nine first downs and sealed the game when Brad Findlay scored a touchdown on a 55-yard interception return. This avenged a season-opening loss last season.
  • In a bizarre moment, Glynn (Ga.) Academy offensive lineman Joshua Anderson did “The Worm” dance in an attempt to draw Benedictine offsides. There are conflicting reports as to whether or not it worked. One report says it did, the other claims officials whistled Glynn for a false start.
