Wisconsin teams honor former player during opening game

It’s relatively common to see a team honor a teammate who recently died with some sort of in-game tribute. Last Friday in Wisconsin, two high school squads who were playing against each other paid homage in their own ways.

A moment of silence fell throughout the stands and field during the season-opening game last Friday between Chetek-Weyerhaeuser (Wis.) and Elk Mound (Wis.).

In May, one of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser’s players, Owen Knutson, died in a Cessna plane crash. Both teams took a moment out of the game to honor the player.

Knutson was slated to be the senior starting middle linebacker, so his former Chetek teammates started the game by fielding only 10 players and carrying his jersey out to his traditional position on the field. Both teams then took a knee in the direction of their respective sidelines to pay homage to the former star defender, according to USA Today High School Sports.

Since Chetek was in an illegal formation, they were flagged.  The opposing team decided to take a penalty of their own, standing until the play clock ran out, and referees called a delay of game infraction.

Both teams removed their helmets and took a knee before beginning the game.

With the entire Knutson family serving as honorary captains, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser won 20-6, with an emotional, two-touchdown second half as reported by KMSP.
