High school football kicks off in 19 states Friday, meaning more than half the country will be basking in the summer glow of a Football Friday Night.
Schools in Alabama, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia will play their season openers this weekend.
Here are a few of the key storylines to watch as these states begin their seasons:
California
Teams in California aren’t wasting any time, facing tough opponents. Calabasas will face Dorsey in its first game of the season. Calabasas Coyotes are looking to execute a new defense. Senior Coyote linebacker Reggie Hughes told Los Angeles Daily News, “Dorsey will prove our toughness (because) it’s going to be a physical game.”
California powerhouse St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) is nationally ranked at No. 3. MaxPreps Top 10 High School Football Games of the Week, facing St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) ranked No.17 nationally.
Colorado
Throughout the state, eyes will be on the men in the trenches. Former NFL guard Matt McChesney, who played for the St. Louis Rams, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and the homestate Denver Broncos, helps train many of the offensive linemen Colorado. He said the state is deep in talent on the offensive line.
Ninth-ranked Highlands Ranch is looking to have one of the best offensive lines in the state. Highlands Ranch coach Mark Robinson told CHASSNOW, "Pretty much any running back in the state would love to run behind this line."
Florida
Every team in Florida is going to be feeling the pressure from week one. Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has launched a new playoff points system that will apply to teams in all eight classifications.
Florida’s opening weekend is packed full of huge matchups —including Cocoa vs. Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), Raines vs. Robert E. Lee, and Charlotte vs. Dunbar — plus the addition of three new public schools whose football teams will be joining FHSAA.
Illinois
Preseason rankings show some traditional dominant powerhouses having successful seasons again. MaxPreps compiled a list of Illinois high school football teams they are referring to as the "Fab 5," which includes Prairie Ridge, Loyola Academy, East St. Louis, Maine South, and IC Catholic Prep.
Other teams throughout the state are looking to have a successful season, with many teams having impactful players returning. Check out this preseason list published by the Daily Chronicle that takes a look at the Top 25 power rankings in the state.
Michigan
Grand Rapids West Catholic, in Division 5, is seeking its fifth straight state championship.
Several individual players are catching attention around the state. Quarterback Bryce Veasley, a multi-sport athlete and Bowling Green commit, is looking to lead West Bloomfield to a successful season.
The Detroit Free Press has a few other players and teams to watch for this season.
This season will also be the first in which the Detroit Public School League expands to three divisions.
Ohio
It looks to be another tough season for high school teams in Ohio. Cleveland.com has listed a few schools to watch as well as their preseason predictions, broken down by division.
However, some divisions may look different as some schools changed classifications.
Looking at Ohio Division 1, which some will argue is one of the toughest in the country, Cincinnati’s St. Xavier will be a team to watch —led by Wisconsin recruit, quarterback Chase Wolf. St.Ignatius (Cleveland) is heading into this season striving to win a state championship, after losing to St. Xavier in double overtime last season in the state championship game.
Keep a lookout for Ohio's D-III class, Dayton Dunbar’s, Tavion Thomas, who has committed to Oklahoma, and is one of the state’s standout running backs.

Virginia
Big 10 and SEC schools have their eyes on several players from Virginia.
Richmond.com has noted top high schools to watch this season. Among those schools is Manchester, which has a promising team that can lead them to have not only a good season this season but next season as well.
Dinwiddie, Last year’s 4A state runner-ups, has several returning players K’Vaughan Pope, outside linebacker, who recently committed to Ohio State and Zyan Sturdivant, running back. Dinwiddie is expected to make another run for state again this season.
Many high school teams in Virginia are looking to impress, as they have dominant players returning and promising new talent entering their rosters.
