Miami Dolphins help Miami Central High School football team return home

Hurricane Irma might have made landfall last weekend, but it left one Florida high school football team displaced in Las Vegas for a week.

The Central High School Rockets (Miami), ranked No. 7 in the country by MaxPreps, traveled to Las Vegas to play No. 14 Bishop Gorman for a game Sept. 8, in which the Rockets defeated Bishop Gorman, 24-20.

However, because of Hurricane Irma, the Rockets were unable to return home to Miami because the hurricane affected their travel plans.

The team quickly faced financial issues because they do not have the funding. A three-day trip soon became a nine-day stay.

Rockets head coach Roland Smith told the Miami Herald, “We don’t have a budget like a college. We don’t have a national budget to stay extra days after a game and stuff like that.”

The Miami Dolphins heard about the Rockets’ situation and has helped the team.

Players from the Dolphins, including Kenny Stills, Ndamukong Suh, Reshad Jones, Jarvis Landry, Lawrence Timmons and others decided to help the Rockets.

Dolphins players have agreed to contribute money to help pay the team’s bill, and have also arranged transportation from the airport to the school as the team returns to Miami.

Smith spoke very highly of the lending hand from the Dolphins to the Miami Herald, saying, “But when you have an organization the kids look up to and they step forward, it’s an awesome thing.”

Being grounded in Las Vegas hasn't kept the Central from practicing. The team has turned the hotel parking lot of the SpringHill Suites located near the Las Vegas Convention Center into their 'practice field' until they return home.
