An in-state rivalry, an intra-city rivalry, an ending with trickery and incredible catches highlighted this weekend’s high school football action.
The in-state matchup was also a game that involved two nationally ranked teams. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida), ranked second in the MaxPreps poll, topped No. 12 Miami Central, 24-15. In a game filled with NCAA Division I prospects, with scouts from Clemson, Texas and Minnesota in attendance, a backup wide receiver made the game’s biggest play.
Ryker Brazerol’s third-quarter punt block occurred when the Ascenders trailed Central 9-3, and led to a go-ahead touchdown. Miami Central wasn’t done, however, as Willie Davis scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to regain the lead. IMG took the lead for good, however, when Alabama recruit Trey Sanders scored on a 65-yard touchdown run.

The annual matchup between Cincinnati powers St. Xavier and Moeller wasn’t much of a contest this time, as the defending Ohio Division I champ Bombers overcame an early Moeller touchdown to cruise to a 30-7 victory in front of a capacity crowd.
Our football game against St. X is sold out - we will not sell tickets at the gate.

Moeller, a traditional Cincinnati power that counts Baseball Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin among its alums, fell to 3-2. MaxPreps ranks St. Xavier 14th nationally.
“Fake” news
The most improbable win arguably came from Nashville, Tennessee, where Father Ryan trailed Ravenswood 31-28 with time expiring. The Irish lined up for a potential game-tying, 40-yard field goal with six seconds left. Instead, this happened.
Father Ryan 34, Ravenswood 31.
Father Ryan coach Brian Rector, who led Ravenswood to a 2005 state title, told The Tennessean (Nashville) the Irish practiced the play every week. “We sure have messed it up a few times this year. We finally got it right.”
What a play. Peel back the left wing, flip it to him and he does a lot of work to get in. https://t.co/MRITJnPqLB

Catch these plays
This weekend featured catches you’re not likely to see at any level, but high school teams produced three.
The first is so improbable, even the receiver couldn’t believe he caught it.
Mount Vernon (Atlanta)’s Justin Douglas went up for a pass, had the ball slip through his hands as he leaped to make the catch. The ball then ricocheted off the defender’s foot and back into Douglas’ hands as he fell to the ground. (link to USA Today HS sports article here)
Worst call ever or unbelievable catch?? Officials called this a reception, I thought no chance ... but check out the super-slo-mo-heel-kick! pic.twitter.com/qgarl5eFNf

Not to be outdone, Richmond Hill (Georgia)’s Matt Daniel did this Friday during the Wildcats’ 28-0 win over Lakeside Evans.

Finally, Clear Springs (Texas) High School receiver Isaiah Bibb earned a touchdown the hard way during Friday’s 28-23 loss to Westfield (Houston).
