Want to know how big the California Open Division high school football state championship was Saturday?
Check out this tweet about the contest between Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and De La Salle (Concord):
How big is the Mater Dei vs Concord De La Salle California football state championship game tonight? Tickets are more expensive than four NFL games being played this weekend...
— Pat Doney (@PatDoneyNBC5) December 17, 2017
The game itself didn’t live up to the hype, though. Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps and USA Today, rolled to a 52-21 win over De La Salle, No. 12 in the USA Today poll and No. 15 in MaxPreps. The Monarchs ended the season at 15-0, and their closest victory margin all season was 10 points (a 31-21 win over St. John Bosco on Oct. 13, which was also the Monarchs’ lowest offensive output all season).
USC-bound quarterback J.T. Daniels completed 20 of 30 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for two more TDs. Teammate Amon ra-St. Brown, who’s uncommitted but considered to be the top uncommitted recruit in California, caught eight passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns.
The only question that remains is where this team ranks among the best high school football squads of all time.
Mater Dei is the best high school football team in the country. Don't think anyone can beat them. And Amon-Ra St. Brown might be the best WR in the West in at least the last decade.

Here’s a look at the rest of the weekend’s high school football action, presented by Tackle Tube USA:
A first in Georgia

North Gwinnett High School had to wait an extra week, not to mention several years after state runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2013, to win its first state championship Friday.
It couldn’t have come in more dramatic fashion.
After Colquitt County appeared to have clinched victory with a go-ahead touchdown pass with 49 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs drove close enough for kicker Cameron Clark to boot a game-winning field goal as time expired to give North Gwinnett a 19-17 victory. Watch the video highlights here.

Really excited for North Gwinnett. Not a better story in GA than @JimmyUrzua4. Goes into senior season probably not expecting to play much at QB; all he does is win every game as a starter and a State Championship. Great lesson for all QBs to be prepared for your opportunity 💯

Clark redeemed himself with the game-winner after missing an extra-point try earlier in the game.
The game was played a week late, after a snowstorm postponed all but one of Georgia’s state championship games.
A Texas-sized upset

The Lake Travis Cavaliers are defending 6A D1 state champions, but were considered to be an underdog entering Saturday’s semifinal showdown against Katy, ranked sixth by MaxPreps and 12th by USA Today.
Instead, the Cavs stunned the Tigers, who entered the game unbeaten, 28-14 at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
Lake Travis, 13-2 and ranked 23rd nationally by MaxPreps, used a pair of trick plays to account for its margin of victory. Receivers Garrett Wilson and Hudson Card each threw touchdown passes to the other. Meanwhile, Cavs quarterback Matthew Baldwin also completed 22 of 30 passes for 225 yards.

Things won’t get any easier for Lake Travis in this Saturday’s state championship game. The Cavs will face Allen, ranked third nationally by USA Today and fourth by MaxPreps, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The Eagles easily defeated Cedar Ridge 28-7 on Saturday in their semifinal game.
Happy for @CoachHankCarter and my old buddies on staff @LTHSCavFootball on punching their ticket to the State Championship Game next week! Get #7 next week boys! Proud of you guys!
