When one 14-year-old California freshman football player suffered an elbow injury that required surgery, his teammates rallied around him.
And no one was more grateful than the boy’s mother.
Jennifer Oswald penned a letter to the Los Angeles Times last week, thanking the teammates for supporting her son Jake and celebrating the role that the sport has played in his life.
“Since my son started playing youth football, his GPA increased, his personality changed into an outgoing confident young man, and his life changed as he felt he belonged to an organization that can truly not exist unless in the team environment,” Oswald wrote.
Jake’s teammates showed their support for their injured teammate by creating a video to wish him well before his surgery.
While it was a demonstration of support to Jake, to Jennifer, it was a testament to the values that football helps instill.
"To me, this video epitomizes youth football, and the benefits of playing. Where else can 14-year-old boys get this kind of love and support from their peers?” she wrote.
