2-Minute Drill: Countering a gap air mirror defense

Knowing is half the battle. For offensive coordinators, that means being able to recognize what the defense is trying to do and countering that strategy.

For coaches game planning against a gap air mirror defense, the key is to give offensive linemen enough spacing to get into their blocks and attacking the linebackers at angles that make one-on-one tackling difficult.

In this week’s 2-Minute Drill, USA Football Senior Manager of Education and Training Andy Ryland breaks down ways to attack a defense that puts four defensive linemen in the gaps, two ends in space wide of the tight ends and five linebackers/defensive backs who mirror the offense’s skill position.
