Pac-12 Fundamental Play of Week: Washington State’s offense pushes past UCLA to continue winning streak

Each week during the 2016 college football season, The Pac-12 Networks will feature a Fundamental Play of the Week from the previous weekend’s slate of games to encourage proper technique, which fosters better on-field performance.

With Washington State leading UCLA 10-7 in the third quarter during a shaky offensive game from both squads, the Cougars entire offensive unit came together to execute what Pac-12 analyst Yogi Roth said might not be just the fundamental play of the week but of the year.

Roth went into detail examining the elements that made the play successful:

  • Quarterback Luke Falk wasting no time getting his team to the line of scrimmage with 38 seconds on the play clock and using the extra time to shift his offense through different formations, assessing how the UCLA defense would react
  • Falk reading the movement of the safety approaching the line of scrimmage and calling an audible, displaying excellent patience scanning the field and connecting with top target Tavares Martin Jr. for a 24-yard gain and a big first down
  • Center Riley Sorenson and left guard Cody O’Connell demonstrating expert communication, starting with Sorenson pointing out where the blitz pressure would be coming from
  • O’Connell utilizing great attention to his surroundings, initially going to the left to help block against the tackle, but reading the situation and moving to the inside to block alongside Sorenson and giving Falk the time to make the perfect throw
  • Martin Jr. high-pointing the ball and tucking it away from pressure while getting his feet down before falling out of bounds

Every aspect of the Cougars’ offense came together to bring the ball to the Bruins’ 13-yard line, leading to a touchdown five plays later. The 27-21 victory helped Washington State continue its four-game winning streak and maintain an undefeated Pac-12 record.

At his post-game conference head coach Mike Leach commended his team’s work ethic and determination to win.

“We’re doing some good things there’s no question,” said Leach. “We work really hard, we play really hard, we’re a focused competitive group. Weather and all that and an opponent the quality of UCLA, who’s loaded obviously, I was proud of our guys sticking in there and playing tough like they did.”

The Pac-12 and more than three dozen leading organizations across medicine, sport and child advocacy support USA Football’s Heads Up Football program for a better, safer game. In recognition of a Pac-12 team’s strong fundamentals, USA Football awards a $4,000 equipment grant to a local youth football organization within the selected university’s market throughout the season.

In honor of Washington State’s display of strong fundamentals, USA Football will award a $4,000 equipment donation to Moses Lake Grid Kids.
