Since it’s finals week at many high schools across the nation, I thought we’d put together a little quiz to test your knowledge of football rules.
Each question has a three-part answer – NCAA, National Federation of State High School Assocaitions and USA Football (youth) rules. See if you can get them all.
Answers can be found at the bottom of the page.
Questions:
- To complete a catch in the NFL, a receiver needs to have possession of the ball with two feet down inbounds. How many feet down are required at the amateur levels?
- A kickoff is made from what yard line?
- Following a touchback on a free kick, the ball is placed on what yard line?
- True or False? On a point-after try following a touchdown, the defense can score by returning a blocked kick, fumble or interception to their opponent’s end zone.
- True or False? All defensive pass interference fouls are enforced as spot fouls.

Answers:
- A receiver needs one foot or body part to land inbounds while he has possession of the ball to be a legal catch.
- NCAA kickoffs are spotted at the 35-yard line. For high school and USA Football, it’s the 40-yard line.
- Touchbacks in the NCAA come out to the 25-yard line. For NFHS and USA Football, it’s the 20-yard line.
- True for the NCAA. False for high school and youth. At those levels, the ball becomes dead when it’s obvious the kicker’s attempt is unsuccessful.
- This is a trick question for NCAA. Enforcement is a spot foul with a maximum distance of 15 yards. False for high school and USA Football. Pass interference penalties are 15 yards with the exception of half-the-distance enforcements.
