6 indoor football-themed activities to beat the cold

By Jackie Bledsoe Jr. | Posted 3/3/2014

As Andrew Luck and the Colts completed their epic comeback this past Saturday, the city of Indianapolis was preparing for one of the worst winter storms in years. The storm has since shut down the city because of 10 to 12 inches of snow followed by freezing wind, which has the temperature outside feeling about 40-below zero.

We have been stuck in the house since then, and my family is very near cabin fever. So what is a family used to being on the go, having sports practices, games and activities for the kids to do?

Football fun when it's too cold outside

Well, as football fans we have watched every football game and/or followed it online. And we've watched too much Netflix! We can't keep going that route, so I decided to find some fun indoor activities to keep us from a full onset of cabin fever.

This winter storm has touched many areas in the country, so your family might be in the same boat. After Florida State beat Auburn in an instant classic BCS Championship game monday night, football games on TV are done until Saturday. I'm betting you could use some fun indoor football-themed activities to keep your family from having cabin fever.

Here are 6 indoor football-themed activities to beat the cold:

  1. Tabletop football. I'm not sure my kids even know what table top football is. I played tabletop football all the time as a kid. It'll be a nice and creative way to have some indoor football fun. Here is a video to show your kids how to make a paper football and some suggested rules.
  2. Football charades. Test out your family's acting skills and knowledge of football with this game. Create a list of football-related words such as football, touchdown, referee, field goal, quarterback and helmet, then act them out. You can even look up the official signals the referees use and act them out. Play to 7 or play four timed quarters.
  3. Hot potato football. This game is like hot potato except you use a small Nerf or toy football. This is a great game for younger kids, but it will be fun for the entire family, especially if you are stuck inside for more than three days!
  4. Football trivia. We do a football trivia post each Thursday, called the Throwback Thursday trivia question that you can use for this game. Use each post as a trivia question. The kids, or your wife (in my case), may not know many of the answers so you can make them multiple choice. Maybe you'll all learn something after playing.
  5. Knee football. This game will require a large open area, so you may need to move some furniture. But what the heck, you are snowed in anyway! This is like a real game of football indoors, played on your knees. This is great for the entire family as little kids can play on their feet, and bigger kids and adults must play on their knees. It levels the playing field for all.
  6. Tag-team Madden football (video game). Our goal after watching TV for two-straight days has been to keep the screen time to a minimum. However, this is Madden! A little game of Madden won't hurt anyone. But play the game with a twist. Set a timer, and let everybody play for a certain period of time, so everyone is involved. No matter how much time is on the game clock when the timer goes off, players switch, and that happens throughout the entire game.

Hopefully, you aren't snowed in like our family. No matter what, you can use these fun football-themed games to enjoy some great times with your family.
