Meet the U.S. National Team Head Coaches for Canton, Ohio’s Middle School Bowl Game Series

Five college coaches and one professional coach will lead the six U.S. National Teams competing this Saturday in Canton, Ohio for the second annual Middle School Bowl Game Series. The event unites top athletes who participated in U.S. National Team Regionals earlier this spring, selected by Regionals’ coaching staffs.

Jeff Anderson (San Jose State University): Valor 

Jeff Anderson is a defensive assistant for San Jose State University (Calif.). Anderson joined the Spartans staff as a graduate assistant in 2018. Prior to San Jose State, Anderson held a grad assistantship at the University of Northern Colorado where he was also a defensive assistant after spending time at Contra Costa Community College (Calif.) as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. 

Gerald Chatham (Cincinnati Bengals): Courage

Gerald Chatman serves as a defensive assistant for the Cincinnati Bengals after a two-year stint at Tennessee State University, where he was defensive ends/outside linebackers coach as well as the special teams coordinator in 2018. Prior to Tennessee State, Chatman coached at Elon University (N.C.) (defensive line, 2016), Texas A&M University (graduate assistant, ’15), Butler University (Ind.) [defensive line coach and assistant recruiting coordinator, ’14], Ball State University (Ind.) [defensive graduate assistant, ’12-13], and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh [defensive line, ’10-11].

David Denham (University of Indianapolis): Freedom 

David Denham enters his second season as the University of Indianapolis’ (Ind.) defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. Denham came to UIndy after spending five seasons on staff at Wabash College (Ind.), helping the Little Giants to a combined 47-8 record and two NCAA Division III playoff appearances. The Indianapolis native also spent five years coaching in Division II at now-defunct Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind. Denham assumed many roles during his time with the Pumas, including associate head coach, special teams coordinator and defensive line coach. Denham began his coaching career at Rose-Hulman in 2006 as a linebackers coach before taking over defensive line coaching duties in 2007. 

Ryan Struthers (UMass Dartmouth): Honor

Ryan Struthers has spent a decade on the coaching staff at UMass Dartmouth, where he currently serves as the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Corsairs. Struthers’ coaching career began early as he worked as the team manager as an undergraduate for two seasons before joining the staff in 2007. In 2011, Struthers accepted a coaching position at Becker College (Mass.), serving as the wide receivers and passing coordinator. He rejoined the UMass Dartmouth staff the following season.  

Joe Battaglia (United States Naval Academy): Stars 

Joe Battaglia is a defensive analyst at Navy (Md.). Battaglia arrived in Annapolis after spending two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Bethany College (W.Va.). He’s held defensive coaching positions at Brevard College (N.C.), Midwestern State University (Texas), Stevenson University (Md.) and Juniata College (Pa.). No stranger to the U.S. National Team program, Battaglia led two U.S. National Teams (U-15 Stars [2018], U-16 National [2019]) to victory at USA Football’s past two International Bowls.

Adam Neugebauer (Slippery Rock University): Stripes 

Adam Neugebauer enters his second season as the offensive coordinator at Slippery Rock University (Pa.) after two seasons as the quarterbacks coach at Georgetown University. While working at Georgetown, Neugebauer served as the head coach of the 2018 U-19 Select Team at USA Football International Bowl IX, where he led his team to a win over Team Nordic. Prior to joining the staff at Georgetown, Neugebauer got his coaching start at Tiffin University (Ohio), where he spent a total of five seasons.
