Play of the Day - Ferris State Sweep

By Keith Grabowski | Posted 12/10/2019

Today’s Play of the Day is from Sam Parker, the offensive line coach from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI. The FSU Sweep is a full sweep concept run out of 21 personnel. The line and both backs lead up for most dangerous man off the line, while the backside receiver motions, getting a full head of steam, takes the hand off and follows his backs. The idea is to get your fastest player the ball going full speed.

Responsibilities:

OL/TE: Hooking to the play side

RB and Sniffer: Leading up around the play side end picking up most dangerous man

#1 Receiver play side: Blocking corner

#1 Receiver back side: Motioning full speed and taking the hand off, following his blockers outside

QB: Give to receiver

About Coach Parker:

Sam Parker

Coach Parker joined the Bulldogs staff for the 2016 campaign as an assistant coach helping out the offensive line. That year, he helped guide the offensive line all the way to the NCAA Division II National Semifinals, a feat which had never been done in school history. This past season, the Bulldogs made it all the way to the NCAA Division II National Championship game losing by a mere 2 points to Valdosta St. During the 2018 season, Parker helped an offensive line unit which finished 7th in Division 2 in rushing yards per game.

Prior to coaching at Ferris State, Parker was an offensive assistant on the Davenport University staff. Additionally, Parker graduated from Ferris in 2014 and had an exceptional plying career as the teams starting tackle for 3 seasons. In his time playing at Ferris, Parker started at 3 different positions on the offensive line and allowed only 1 sack and committed zero penalties during his career.

About Ferris:

Ferris State is currently entrenched in one of the best runs in school history, having made the NCAA Division II National Playoffs for 5 consecutive years. This past season was the best season in school history as they boasted a 15-1 record with their only loss coming in heartbreaking fashion in the Division II National Championship game. The last 3 seasons, Ferris State has failed to not make it to at least the third round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs, effectively making them a Division II powerhouse.
