Last Wednesday, Weequahic High School (Newark, N.J.) defensive lineman Duane Coleman II was honored as the winner of the 2019 USA Football Heart of a Giant award. New York Giants tight end Evan Engram surprised Coleman with the award as part of a presentation at John F. Kennedy School.

In addition to the $1,000 equipment grant he earned for the Weequahic program as a finalist, Coleman received an additional $9,000 equipment grant for the Indians. Along with the nine other finalists, Duane was recognized on-field at MetLife Stadium on Sunday during the Giants’ week 15 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

Prior to the game, Coleman was surprised again, this time by Giants offensive tackle Nate Solder, who presented Duane and his family with an all-expenses paid trip and four tickets to Super Bowl 54 in Miami, Fla.

Presented by Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants, USA Football’s Heart of a Giant award program aims to recognize Tri-State area high school football players who demonstrate an unparalleled work ethic and passion for the game.

Coleman was selected as this year’s winner because of his courage and success he’s had competing for the Weequahic football team, despite having to navigate through obstacles along the way. He was diagnosed with autism and battled depression due to being overweight. Coleman turned to football to overcome these challenges.

“That's when my life and joy and happiness started, and I was motivated by losing weight and working hard to become a better person in life on and off the field,” Coleman said.

He currently attends John F. Kennedy School – a district-wide special education school – but joined the Weequahic High School football team to suit up and hit the gridiron. Coleman has since lost more than 100 pounds, and he’s inspired faculty and other students to stay active as well.

“He is thriving in school and his community,” says Weequahic head football coach Brian Logan. “Duane’s life is better today because of football.”
