By Steve Alic | Posted 7/31/2022

The U.S. Women’s Tackle Football National Team defeated Team Germany 63-0 in its opening game at the 2022 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) in Vantaa, Finland, on Saturday, July 30.

Led by head coach Callie Brownson, the Cleveland Browns Chief of Staff and assistant wide receivers coach, the U.S. roster of 45 women is competing among the world’s eight best women’s tackle football national teams spanning three continents.

This year’s global competition, which consists of three gamedays (July 30, Aug. 3, Aug. 7), has previously been held in 2010 (Sweden), 2013 (Finland), and 2017 (Canada). U.S. National Teams, built and managed by USA Football, have won gold medals at each of the previous three world championships. USA Football is the sport’s national governing body and a member of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee. IFAF is a provisional member of the International Olympic Committee with 72 member nations across five continents.

Saturday, July 30 – IFAF Women’s World Championship

United States 63, Germany 0

Clicking on all cylinders, the U.S. Women’s Tackle National Team (1-0) scored on its first four offensive possessions to jump ahead of Germany (0-1) and never looked back in a 63-0 victory to open the 2022 IFAF Women’s World Championship in Vantaa, Finland, on Saturday, July 30.

A dual quarterback attack of Brittany Bushman (Boston, Mass.) and Tori Tucker (Las Cruces, N.M.) fueled the American offense. Bushman finished the night with 9-of-13 passing for 149 yards and a pair of TD strikes, both to WR Maria Jackson (Twinsburg, Ohio). Bushman and Jackson connected for 27 yards on the game’s first score and again for 38 yards in the second quarter for a 28-0 U.S. lead.

With the U.S. ahead 35-0 late in the second quarter, U.S. Head Coach Callie Brownson inserted Tucker under center, who posted a 7-of-10 passing line for 71 yards, including an 11-yard TD toss to WR Jana Meister (Marietta, Ohio), extending the U.S. edge to 42-0 with 9:23 left in the third quarter. The Americans committed no turnovers in the game while forcing three from Germany.

A fierce defensive performance by the U.S. was punctuated by an 85-yard INT-TD by DB Kristen London (Denver, Colo.) on the last play of the first quarter. After the U.S. made the score 14-0 on Bushman’s 1-yard TD run, Germany returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to the Americans’ 32-yard line. The Germans moved the ball to the U.S. 20 before London caught her first of two interceptions, returning it for a score as the first half expired for a 21-0 lead. London also racked up 3.5 tackles in the shutout win.

Linebacker Carla Odom (Atlanta, Ga.) led the U.S. defense with 5.0 tackles, two coming in the German backfield. U.S. teammate Shatonya Spicer (Atlanta, Ga.) added 3 tackles from her defensive line position, including 1.5 sacks.

A balanced American ground game was led by RBs DAjah Scott (Fairfax, Va.) with 70 rushing yards and a TD on 11 carries, Gina Magana (Magna, Utah) with 11 rushes for 54 yards, and Adriana Gutierrez (San Diego, Calif.) who rang up 51 yards and a TD on 10 carries. The U.S. offense totaled 255 passing yards and 216 yards rushing.

The Americans will next play Finland on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 9:30 a.m. ET.
