The sound of whistles, families cheering and players taking the field brings youth football communities to life.
Every game creates something to celebrate and memories athletes, coaches and families will remember, but some of the moments that make youth football special happen beyond the field.
From North Carolina to Arizona, these powerful stories behind the game can happen anywhere.
For Apex Sports Authority in North Carolina, one Saturday in September brought together football, cheerleading and community service.
The organization welcomed friends from GiGi’s Playhouse Raleigh and its Cheer Gems to a game. GiGi’s Playhouse provides programs and support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
The visit was only part of the day.
Apex Sports Authority also wrapped up a community book drive that collected more than 200 donated books across a range of reading levels.
For the organization, it was another opportunity to use football to bring people together and give its athletes experiences that extend beyond the field. Apex Sports Authority is already looking ahead to more service projects for their kids.
Nearly 2,300 miles away, another youth football community is defining what it means to show up for the game.
The Yuma Coyotes of Yuma American Youth Football represent Yuma, Arizona, but competing regularly takes them well beyond their hometown.
Most weekends, families travel to the Phoenix area for games. That means early mornings, long drives and committing significant time and resources just to give their kids the opportunity to play. The families aren’t alone in their dedication. Coaches spend hours with their teams, and volunteers handle the work behind the scenes. Week after week, an entire community helps put Yuma's young athletes on the field.
The results show up beyond the scoreboard.
Sometimes it's as simple as a player gaining confidence, a teammate picking someone up after a tough play or a young athlete discovering a place where they belong.
Those are the moments Yuma American Youth Football wants its players to carry with them as they grow up, along with the discipline, accountability, teamwork and pride in representing their community that football teaches.
USA Football launched the Tackle Tour this year to celebrate and tell the stories of enrolled organizations and their leagues, coaches, volunteers, families and athletes helping to grow and support the game in their communities.
We want to hear your story too.
Maybe it's a coach who has made a difference, a volunteer whose work happens when nobody is watching, a team or athlete giving back to its town or any other moment in the season that reminds you what youth football can mean to its community.
Enroll your organization and Share Your Story with USA Football to help us celebrate the people and communities behind the game.
