Operating out of the shotgun has become the norm at every level of football, even down to the youngest ages.
A USA Football member recently asked how defenses should counter this look, and Andy Ryland tackles that question in this week’s 2-Minute Drill.
The simple answer: ignore it. Instead of focusing on the quarterback’s relationship to the center, align your defense based on the backfield set and formation the other nine players line up in. Countering four wide receivers is much different than a lineup filled with big bodies.
“If I had two tight ends and two running backs, even though we’re in shotgun, the plays I’m probably going to face are more power-run oriented,” Ryland said. “My defensive formation would want to stop those threats.”
