Footwork skill drills that all great running backs do

As football season hits full stride, running backs need to keep focus on the basics.

That starts with balance, agility and footwork.

Charles Love, an assistant coach at NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis and a U.S. National Team running backs coach, offered the following drills for high school running backs to enhance those fundamental skills all ball-carriers need.

Practice these every day in addition to regular workouts to bolster the skills necessary to compete at higher levels.

Bag drills (Need: six bags)

  • 1 foot in each hole with high knees
  • 2 feet in each hole with high knees
  • Side shuffle down and back
  • Lateral shuffle down and back
  • Feet together, high knee jumps, finish with a burst

Cones drills (Need: seven cones)

  • Speed cut at 45 degrees
  • Pressure cut
  • Hand turns
  • 4 cone cut
  • M drill
  • Karaoke

T drills

  • Pressure cut
  • Angle cut
  • Jump cut

Agility drills

  • Angle cut
  • Jump cut
  • Spin move
  • Step back and burst

Put in the work in practice, and the results will show on the field.
