International Bowl IX: Meet teams from Canada, Mexico, Japan and the Nordic region

Here's a look at the seven different foreign football organizations who'll compete in the 2018 International Bowl, which starts Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Football Canada 

Wed., Jan. 17 vs. U.S. Under-18 National Team, 8 p.m. CT

Fri., Jan. 19 vs. U.S. Under-19 National Team, 8 p.m. CT

Established in 1884, the role of Football Canada has grown significantly over the years as it developed into the national governing body of all Canadian amateur football, representing tackle, touch and flag, including players, coaches, officials and administrators. Football Canada believes in and promotes the pursuit of excellence, achieving equity and fairness, fostering personal growth and physical development, encouraging sportsmanship and ethical participation, fostering a fun and safe environment, advancing accessibility, practicing responsibility and accountability.

Team Nordic

Fri., Jan. 12 vs. U.S. Under-19 Select, 8 p.m. CT

Team Nordic is a collaboration between the Nordic federations of American football. Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark put together a team to compete for the first time in 2018, built on the foundation of development and giving the best football players in the Nordic regions a chance to compete against their peers on the biggest stage. Along with coaches from the participating countries, head coach Jim Criner brings more than 40 years of coaching experience, including NCAA Division I-AA and NFL Europe championships.

Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) - Autenticos Tigres 

Fri., Jan. 12 vs. U.S. Under-18 Select, 4:30 p.m. CT

Fri., Jan. 19 vs. U.S. Under-16 National Team, 1 p.m. CT

Led by head coach Juan Antonio Zamora Montemayor, Autenticos Tigres represents UANL, one of the top universities in Mexico. The team was founded in 1943, and has since forged great athletes and individuals. The program is one of the top four in Mexico, with two national championships and five Major League ONEFA titles. It has three levels (Senior, U-21, U-19) and a total of 450 players.

Chihuahua Broncos 

Fri., Jan. 19 vs. U.S. Under-16 Select, 9:30 a.m. CT

Founded in 2013, the Broncos participate in the State Football League of Chihuahua, Mexico. They have teams in the U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18 levels, with more than 250 young people registered. Their teams, which have won several state championships, have participated in tournaments in Monterrey NL and Torreon Coah. Head coach Federico Landeros Rodriguez actively promotes American football development throughout the country.

Team Japan

Wed., Jan. 17 vs. U.S. Under-17 Stripes, 4:30 p.m. CT

In 2016, the Japan American Football Association (JAFA) created its National Team program, made up of 40 high school all-stars. The team is led by American coaches and plays against U.S. teams at the International Bowl. This program helps younger players learn the game on a higher level, experience different cultures and lead upper-class national teams (U-19, college, senior) in the future. For the 2018 International Bowl, four high school coaches, two coaches/translators and one doctor will travel with the team from Japan.

Team British Columbia

Fri., Jan. 19 vs. U.S. Under-17 National Team, 4:30 p.m. CT

The British Columbia Provincial Football Association (BCPFA) was formed in 2016 as the new governing body of amateur football in the province. It is a member of ViaSport (provincial governing body), Sport BC and Football Canada. Members include BC Community Football Association, BC Football Conference (Junior), BC Football Officials Association and UBC Football. The BCPFA is committed to ensuring that football – at all levels - grows in the province. The organization develops, promotes, coordinates, regulates and fosters the growth of all aspects of amateur football. BCPFA makes sure the game continues to be safer, and that its brand of football is noticed from coast to coast. 

Team Laguna Select

Wed., Jan. 17 vs. U.S. Under-15 Select, 1 p.m. CT

Team Laguna Select is from La Laguna, a metropolis comprised from the cities of Torreón, Gómez Palacio and Lerdo. La Laguna is rich in culture and football history. Laguna Select is made up of multiple youth football leagues, such as the Afail, LFL and Durango leagues. Football has been played in La Laguna for over 80 years. The region is home to many competitive college teams and has sent many players to national and international competition.

Football Ontario

Fri., Jan. 12 vs. U.S. Under-17 Stars, 1 p.m. CT

The Ontario Football Alliance is the Provincial Sport Organization for football in Ontario, with its head office in Guelph, Ontario. The Alliance is also a proud member of the national sport organization - Football Canada. Each year the Alliance selects top talent from across the province to compete in the Football Canada Cup, U-16 East Challenge and International Bowl.
