He’s a first-round Major League Baseball draft pick and a five-star football recruit. Will he sign with the Oakland Atheltics or not? A tough decision awaits the University of Oklahoma’s potential starting quarterback, Kyler Murray.

Monday night, Murray was the No. 9 overall pick in the MLB draft by the A's. The signing bonus on the ninth slot is valued at almost $4.8 million - a price that isn’t keeping Murray from the gridiron later this year.

“I will be playing football this season,” Murray told nbcdfw.com. “Confirmed.”

After two years of sitting on the bench as Baker Mayfield’s backup, it could finally be time for Murray to showcase his skills on the Sooners' field this fall.

In high school, Murray led traditional Texas power Allen High School to three state titles, making him one of the greatest high school quarterbacks Texas had ever seen. In 2015, Murray signed with Texas A&M where he played in eight games and started in three as a freshman. Murray accumulated 686 passing yards and ran 345 for the Aggies before transferring to Oklahoma the next season.

To abide by NCAA rules for transfers, Murray sat out the 2016 season. In his mind, he was set to start in 2017, but Baker Mayfield was granted an extra year of eligibility and came back for his final season. Murray only started in one game against West Virginia after Mayfield was benched for his actions after a game against Kansas the week before.

Murray has until July 6 to decide if he wants to sign with Oakland. There is a possibility for Murray to sign with the A’s and still play football, postponing baseball for the 2019 season. The NCAA allows athletes to play professionally if they are only receiving money from the pro franchise while remaining amateur status in a college sport.

Oklahoma’s football coach, Lincoln Riley, did not share any information on who would be starting after spring practice. Murray is competing for the starting position with sophomore Austin Kendall. Riley is confident Murray will be with the Sooners this fall.

“I fully expect him to be with us,” Riley said.
