October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, and USA Football wants to make sure your teams will have access to the right equipment in case an emergency arises.

USA Football is partnering with Physio-Control for the 2017 AED Grant

Through this grant, USA Football and Physio-Control will donate automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to youth and scholastic football programs.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death for youth and teen athletes during exercise according to Physio- Control, however with an AED teams will have the right tool, and adults will be able to react properly if an incident occurs.

If an athlete goes into SCA, it is crucial for chances of survival that they receive defibrillation within four to six minutes, according to Heart Rhythm Society. Accessibility to AEDs for football coaches, athletes, trainers, and fans is so important.

A majority of athletes who suffer SCA on the field show no warning symptoms because SCA is different than a heart attack.

SCA occurs when the heart's electrical system causes irregular heartbeats, known as arrhythmias.

Arrhythmias can cause the heart to stop pumping blood to the body because the heart is beating too fast, too slow, or has irregular rhythm.
